Dryness & Dehydration: How The Summer Season Affects Your Skin

thumbnail preview

Summer is finally here, making significant lifestyle changes all across Dubai. With the growing popularity of face fitness and skincare treatments, summer also calls for substantial changes in our skincare routine to keep it healthy and fine throughout the season. Although not much emphasized, summer can result in severe skin issues when not properly taken care of. Two of the main ways how summer affects our skin are through dehydration and dryness. While many believe dehydration and dryness are the same things, it’s not. This article will clear you up on how summer affects your skin through dehydration and dryness and how to combat them effectively.

Dry Vs. Dehydrated Skin

The main difference between dry and dehydrated skin is that dry skin is a skin type, whereas dehydration is a skin condition. In addition, dehydrated skin is a condition that lacks water, whereas dry skin lacks natural oils (also called sebum).

Generally, skin types are classified as regular, dry, combination, and oily. While you are born with one skin type, it changes gradually with age, season, and alterations in diet and lifestyle. Your skin type can also change depending on the collagen boost you provide your skin as you age. With dry skin, your sebaceous glands don’t produce enough natural oils.

Dehydration occurs when your body is losing more water than it’s taking in. And unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin results in the following symptoms,

  • Shadows around the face (especially under the eyes and around your nose)
  • The appearance of fine lines and surface wrinkles
  • Darker under-eye circles
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dullness
  • Faintness
  • Itchiness
  • Less frequent and darker urination
  • Lightheadedness
  • Overall weakness
  • Sunken eyes

Causes Of Dry Skin In Summer

  • Air conditioners

Summer naturally means spending more time around air conditioners. Unfortunately, while this helps you get away with the Dubai heat, it also soaks up the natural oils in your skin, leading to dry and flaky skin.

  • Clogged pores

Again something to do with excessive use of air conditioners. AC is incredibly drying for the skin as it draws out all the moisture. When this happens, it overproduces natural oil in your skin to try and rebalance itself. This excess oil will clog your pores and block sweat glands, causing dryness.

  • Taking a hot shower

Some of us have a habit of taking a hot shower and don’t change that routine in summer either. Unfortunately, hot showers and summer don’t always go hand in hand. Hot showers, added with heat, will dehydrate your skin, leading to dry skin.

  • Other skin conditions

Those with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or psoriasis are prone to dry skin, leading to severe dryness in summer.

Causes Of Dehydrated Skin In Summer

  • Not drinking enough water

The definite cause of dehydration is the loss of more water than you drink. In summer, as our body is exposed to heat, it’s natural for our skin to dehydrate often, and not drinking enough water to replenish it can increase dehydration.

  • Sweating too much

In summer, sweating is the natural process through which our body tries to cool down. However, sweating can cause dehydration leading to dehydrated skin. The dehydration effect of sweating in summer can be severe if you work out and do not drink enough water to rehydrate yourself.

  • Sunburns

Sunburns are unavoidable in summer. Sunburned skin can lose a lot of water leading to dehydrated skin. And if you don’t drink, rehydrate and allow the body to heal the sunburn-induced dehydration severely.

  • Too much pool time

In summer, most of us spend our free time in outdoor pools to cool ourselves. While this is a good idea, too much exposure to sunlight can cause sunburns leading to dehydration. In addition, the chemicals from the chlorine in the pool strip the skin from its required moisture, leaving it dehydrated.
